| SUN VALLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS: PROFIT AND LOSS |
| Thursday, July 05, 2007 |
PROFIT AND LOSS, a multidisciplinary project in Ketchum and Hailey. The early years of the twenty-first centruy have seen some of the greatest corporate scandals in history and a growing gap between rich and poor. Who profits and who loses in today`s economy? Is globalization uniting the world or increasing the division between those who produce and those who consume? How is technology creating new models of philantrophy? This project seeks to promote civic dialogue about these questions and others. Project includes visual arts exhibitions, film screenings and discussions with scholars, philantropists and CEOs. |

| PROFIT & LOSS EXHIBITION |
| Thursday, July 05, 2007 |
Through materials ranging from photography and painting to tapestry and latch hook rugs, six artists consider questions of corporate philanthropy, ethical lapses, the proliferation of logos, and brand names, unbalanced systems of trade and the values reinforced by a consumer culture. Boise based artist Stephanie Wilde`s monumental work Harmed is a response to the scandal at energy giant Enron. Marcus Kenney`s collages humorously illustrate the high price we pay for our frenzy of accumulation. New York-based artist Rob Conger uses a traditional "folk" medium not commonly found in museums: latch hook rugs. Minera Cuevas`s photographs document Dodgem, an installation in a amusement park in hr hometown of MExico City. Jooyeon Park photographed street scenes in Seoul, South area, and then digitally replaced all advertisements and signs with solid bars of color. Matthew Cusick is a Bay Area artist whose images of trade routes that map oil supplies from the Middle East to the West allude to a relationship of production and consumption that is out of balance. Gabriel Kuri transforms everyday sales receipts into large, handcrafted Gobelin tapestries, made by weavers in a workshop in Guadalajara, Mexico. |
